A popular Houston Heights nursery is really getting into the season of giving this year. Buchanan’s Native Plants, which has been in business for 35 years, is spreading some holiday cheer this week by giving away free Christmas trees to anyone who stops by the garden center, located at 611 East 11th Street, starting on Monday.

“We want everyone to have a merry Christmas!” Buchanan’s staff announced on Facebook Monday afternoon, including photos of their selection. “Today until they are all gone, Buchanan’s will be giving away 1 FREE Christmas Tree per household to take home. Christmas tree stand included!”

Heather Buchanan, part owner of the nursery along with her husband Zach, said they preferred any leftover trees go into the homes of people that need them rather than ending up in a landfill or being recycled. “Because we’re a week out [from Christmas] we felt like this was the time to do it and give people the opportunity to actually come into the store and take advantage and actually decorate their Christmas tree with their friends and family before Christmas this weekend,” she said, adding that they have donated leftover trees in the past but never to this scale.

Buchanan estimates the store has at least 400 of the trees left, but they are already going quickly. Those who have stopped by already to take one home were in disbelief at the offer. “They ask ‘is this for real?'” Buchanan said, laughing. “They were excited. We’ve given a lot of trees away already but we still have a good selection.”

Those in need of a tree this holiday season can choose from traditional Fraser, Nobles, Nordmann and concolor firs. Each of the trees sizes range anywhere between 6 feet to more than 12 feet. The trees must be picked from the nursery. Buchanan’s staff will also be offering twine to bind the trees to cars and will assist mounting them atop vehicles.

Fans of the nursery applauded the gesture on Facebook. “Thank you growing up we never got our tree until Xmas Eve when dad could get one for a buck or less. Until one year there was a shortage and we almost didn’t get one. Thanks for giving such a wonderful gift to some family in need,” read one comment. “Wow that’s a super cool thing y’all doing guess that’s why I love this place,” wrote another.

Buchanan’s Native Plants will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. this week and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The nursery will be closed on Christmas day.
